5 Dumpster Safety Tips You Should Know

Congratulations on renting a dumpster. Whether it’s a 12-yard bin for cleaning out your garage or a 30-yard container for a remodeling project, it’s important to ensure your safety and the safety of your family members around the dumpster. Oaks Dumpster Rental has some tips for dumpster safety while you work on your residential project.

Choose a Safe Location

When it comes to home jobs, dumpsters are usually placed on driveways because they are flat and level. You may want it close to the house for your convenience in making trips to discard debris. Be careful that you don’t ask for it to be placed too close to the main entrance of your home. It may pose a risk to family members who are entering and leaving through that door.

Wear Protective Gear

Depending on the type of waste you’re dealing with, you need to consider your clothing. Hard hats, steel-toed boots, protective goggles, or gloves may be appropriate. In addition to what you’re disposing of in the dumpster, be aware that the bin itself can have sharp edges.

Operate Safely

Dumpsters are pretty straightforward, but make sure you are very cautious when operating any levers, hinges, latches, or locks. If you throw something in the dumpster by mistake, be very careful entering the dumpster to retrieve it, especially if there is a lot of junk in the bin.

Remember that when full, your bin cannot have any items hanging over the edges or sticking out of the top. These are safety hazards and could fall when we are hauling your dumpster away, causing injury or property damage.

Keep Children & Pets Away

The appearance of a huge dumpster in your driveway may be intriguing for children and pets, alike. Kids’ hands could get caught in swinging doors or cut on sharp edges. Children should not be allowed around or in the dumpster at any time.

Pets are also curious by nature. Avoid throwing any food waste in your bin that might tempt them to try to get in. Food waste can also attract raccoons and other pests that could pose health risks to your family.

Avoid Fires

Some of the debris you discard is likely flammable. That makes your dumpster a fire hazard. Do not smoke near the dumpster or discard cigarette butts, matches, lighters, or any other items that could start a fire in the container.
